Chapter 2 — Ancient Egypt: The Technical Civilization
Forget the tomb paintings for a moment. Look at the paperwork.
Egypt left behind the most complete technical archive of the ancient world — mathematics papyri, star clocks, surgical case notes, calendars so accurate Rome adopted them. This chapter reads Egypt the way an engineer reads a workshop: what did they actually compute, how precisely, and what does the record refuse to support?
The Mathematics in the Papyri
The Rhind Papyrus opens with a table of fractions worked to a standard modern students struggle to match. The Moscow Papyrus contains the volume of a truncated pyramid — a formula textbooks call remarkable for its era, stated here without apology, because this course checks the artifacts before it repeats the adjectives. Egypt's circle rule stands in the record at 256/81. It is not 3.1416, and this course says so — precision about Egypt is the respect Egypt is owed.
The Instruments of Knowing
The seked turned slope into a number, and the pyramids rose on it. The decans turned the night sky into a clock of thirty-six stars. The merkhet — a plumb line and a sighting notch — let priests fix time and alignment to the width of a hair. The civil calendar ran 365 days with a discipline the modern world inherited and promptly forgot to credit.
The House of Life
Egypt ran institutions where texts were copied, medicine was systematized, and knowledge was maintained as infrastructure. The Edwin Smith Papyrus reads like a modern surgical manual: case, examination, verdict, treatment — forty-eight times, without magic. And at Deir el-Medina, the tomb-builders' village left behind the ancient world's most human archive: work rosters, love songs, the first recorded labor strike in history, and letters written to dead relatives as a normal household practice.
Chapter 2's verdict is the course's spine: Egypt was not a civilization groping toward knowledge. It was a technical civilization in full possession of its methods — and knowing exactly what they had is how you recognize what may have stood behind them.
